Chengalpattu court to take up Tamil Nadu CM Vijay‘s divorce case today

Chennai, June 15 (IANS) The Chengalpattu Family Welfare Court is set to hear the divorce petition involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK President C. Joseph Vijay and his wife Sangeetha on Monday, a case that has attracted widespread public attention amid reports of possible reconciliation between the couple.

Sangeetha had approached the family court seeking dissolution of her marriage with Vijay, citing differences between them. In her petition, she reportedly alleged mental harassment and claimed that Vijay was involved in an extramarital relationship with a film actress. She sought a decree of divorce, maintenance commensurate with Vijay’s social and financial status, and the right to continue residing in the family’s Neelankarai residence.

The case was previously taken up by the Chengalpattu Family Welfare Court, which adjourned the matter after neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared in person. Only their legal representatives were present during the hearing.

Counsel for both sides informed the court that their clients were public figures and that personal appearances could create security and logistical concerns. They therefore requested permission for the proceedings to be conducted through video conferencing.

Taking note of the submissions, the court postponed the hearing to June 15.

The latest hearing assumes significance as it comes shortly after Vijay assumed office as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Speculation has been rife over whether the Chief Minister would make a personal appearance before the court or participate through virtual means, subject to the court’s approval.

The proceedings have also generated considerable interest among Vijay’s supporters and political observers, particularly following reports circulating on social media that efforts are underway to bring the couple back together.

While neither Vijay nor Sangeetha has publicly commented on the reports, discussions about a possible reconciliation have gained traction online in recent days.

With the case coming up for hearing once again, attention is focused on whether the court proceedings will provide any clarity on the future of the couple’s relationship.

The hearing is expected to be closely watched by supporters, members of the public and the media, given the high-profile nature of the case and Vijay’s position as the state’s Chief Minister.
