Ujjain, June 18 (IANS) A suspected double murder has come to light in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district after the bodies of a man and a woman were found in an agricultural field on Thursday, prompting police to launch a detailed investigation.

The bodies were recovered from a field in Brahmankheda village under the jurisdiction of the Raghavi police station.

According to police, local residents spotted the bodies lying in the field during the morning hours and immediately informed the authorities. Police teams led by Raghavi SHO Virendra Bandewar rushed to the spot and secured the area.

During the preliminary investigation, officers found the bodies lying nearly 100 metres apart near the boundary of the field, indicating that the incident may have occurred elsewhere in the area before the victims collapsed or were dumped at separate locations.

The deceased were identified as Kaluram Verma (35) and Manju Sharma (36), both residents of Bailakheda village in Ujjain district.

Investigators said both bodies bore visible head injuries, strengthening suspicions of a violent assault. The exact cause and time of death, however, will be confirmed only after post-mortem examinations and forensic analysis.

“The bodies have injury marks and prima facie the case appears suspicious. We are investigating all possible angles and awaiting the post-mortem report,” a police officer said.

As news of the incident spread, tension gripped the surrounding villages and a large number of curious onlookers gathered near the crime scene.

Senior police officials, including DSP Jaden Lingjerpa, visited the site and reviewed the investigation. An FSL team was called in to collect forensic evidence.

Investigators gathered samples from the field and examined the surrounding area for clues that could help reconstruct the sequence of events.

Police sources said preliminary inquiries suggest that the man and woman knew each other. However, officials have refrained from linking the deaths to any specific motive and said it would be premature to draw conclusions before scientific and forensic reports are received.

Statements from family members and local residents are being recorded, while police are also examining the victims’ movements before their deaths.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and police said the findings of the medical and forensic reports will be crucial in determining the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation is underway.
