New Delhi, June 20 (IANS) Hours after the killing of a train passenger during a violent scuffle at Delhi’s Shahdara railway station on Saturday, the police team have apprehended eight accused from the Muzaffarnagar Railway station.

The accused, currently in police custody, are being interrogated and grilled for the reasons behind the violent altercation that led to the death of a 32-year-old person, who worked as a security guard for the Delhi Metro.

The incident occurred at Platform No. 3 of Shahdara Railway Station in East Delhi on Saturday, where a man was trying to board the Yoga Express. As he, along with fellow passengers, tried to force their way inside the train, a quarrel broke out among a group of passengers, which turned violent.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased, identified as Pankaj Dhama, was assaulted with punches and kicks by the co-passengers during the altercation. The assault turned fatal as he collapsed on the platform, and his condition deteriorated.

The chaos at Delhi’s Shahdara station erupted at around 6 a.m. this morning, as a verbal dispute between the passengers turned into a heated exchange and then a physical altercation.

According to eyewitnesses, Pankaj Dhama was attacked and assaulted by a group of passengers, comprising seven to eight in number.

The deceased’s family claimed that he didn’t receive timely assistance from the railway authorities, which resulted in his demise. Some of his relatives said that the victim was transported to the hospital by some of the passengers rather than the authorities, and the delay cost his life.

“Had he been taken to the hospital early, his life would have been saved,” said a family member.

Pankaj Dhama worked as a guard for the Delhi Metro. He is survived by a daughter and a son.

The police are currently questioning the accused to ascertain the reasons behind the altercation, leading to his death.

Meanwhile, a footage is doing the rounds on social media which shows a group of people surrounding and attacking an individual on a platform where a train is stationed. The footage is believed to have been recorded from some onlooker’s mobile phone, present at the platform during the scuffle.
