EU revises travel advisory for Assam, boosting tourism and investment prospects: CM Sarma

Guwahati, June 20 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday welcomed the decision of European Union (EU) member states to revise their travel advisories and remove restrictive guidance for citizens visiting Assam, describing the move as a significant endorsement of the state’s improving security situation and growing global profile.

In a post on social media platform X, Chief Minister Sarma termed the development as “encouraging news for Assam” and said it would provide a major boost to tourism, business engagement and international cooperation.

The Chief Minister noted that the decision follows similar steps taken earlier by Australia and Japan, both of which had revised their travel advisories concerning Assam.

“After Australia and Japan, now EU member states have revised their travel advisories and removed restrictive guidance for their citizens visiting the state. This timely development, following the recent visit of EU diplomats, is a strong vote of confidence in Assam and bodes well for deeper EU–Assam engagement,” Chief Minister Sarma wrote.

He said the revision reflects growing international confidence in Assam’s stability, governance and development trajectory.

According to the Chief Minister, the move is expected to strengthen tourism activities, attract greater business interest and enhance people-to-people exchanges between Assam and European nations.

The development comes shortly after a delegation of European diplomats visited Assam and held discussions with state government officials on issues relating to trade, investment, culture and regional cooperation.

The visit was seen as an important step towards expanding engagement between the Northeastern state and the European bloc.

Chief Minister Sarma also expressed gratitude to the European Union and its representatives for facilitating the decision.

“Grateful to EU Ambassador to India Herve Delphin for his support in taking this forward,” he said in the social media post.

The Chief Minister has repeatedly highlighted Assam’s emergence as a preferred destination for tourism and investment, citing improvements in infrastructure, connectivity, law and order, and economic growth.

The latest revision of travel advisories by EU member states is expected to further enhance the state’s appeal among international travellers and investors.
