Agartala, June 23 (IANS) Tripura’s first public electric vehicle (EV) charging station was inaugurated in Agartala on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards promoting clean and sustainable transportation in the state while facilitating convenient charging facilities for EV users, officials said.

A senior official of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) said that as the nodal agency for the Central government’s PM E-Drive Scheme, the corporation has already submitted a proposal for the establishment of 94 public EV charging stations at various locations across the state.

The official described the development as a major boost for existing electric vehicle owners as well as those planning to purchase EVs in the future.

Charging electric vehicles has now become much easier with the launch of the modern public charging station at the Banamalipur Power House campus in Agartala.

According to the TSECL official, the charging station has been established by the Corporation in collaboration with private organisation.

It is the first CAPEX-based public electric vehicle charging station in the state and has now been made operational for public use, he said.

One of the key highlights of the facility is its fully digital and self-service charging system.

The official noted that users do not require any staff assistance to charge their vehicles, they simply need to install the designated mobile application, select their vehicle model, make the payment online, and connect the charging gun to the vehicle.

The charging process begins automatically and stops once the selected charging level is achieved.

The facility has been equipped with a 30 kW DC fast charger and a 7.4 kW AC charger, making it suitable for both private and commercial electric vehicles.

The advanced charging infrastructure ensures fast, safe, reliable and convenient charging services for EV users.

Officials said that the growing adoption of electric vehicles not only helps reduce fuel expenses for consumers but also plays a crucial role in reducing environmental pollution.

Consequently, EVs are increasingly emerging as an affordable, efficient and eco-friendly mode of transportation, the official said, adding that the newly inaugurated charging station is expected to make EV ownership more convenient and encourage a larger number of people to switch to electric mobility.

TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu said that the corporation is working on a comprehensive long-term plan to promote the use of electric vehicles and expand charging infrastructure across the state.

“Once this ambitious project is implemented, EV charging facilities will be available in almost all major parts of the state, significantly improving charging accessibility for vehicle owners,” he added.

Basu said that the initiative is expected to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, strengthen green mobility infrastructure, and contribute substantially to the vision of a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Tripura.
