New Delhi, June 24 (IANS) In a significant breakthrough against motor vehicle theft, a team of Delhi Police’s Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) arrested two active auto-lifters and recovered four stolen vehicles, officials said on Wednesday.

The arrest of the accused and recovery of stolen vehicles led to a crackdown in four Motor Vehicle Theft (MVT) cases registered in the district.

An official statement said that on June 22, acting on specific information, the AATS team laid a trap near Government Boys Senior Secondary School in the national capital’s Ghonda area and intercepted two persons riding a motorcycle. When asked to produce the ownership documents of the vehicle, they failed to do so and attempted to mislead the police team. Upon thorough verification, the motorcycle was found to be stolen with an e-FIR No. 013682/26, registered at Bhajanpura Police Station.

One of the accused has been identified as 19-year-old Kaif, a resident of Delhi’s North Ghonda. The second accused is 21-year-old Saad, a resident of the national capital’s Maujpur area.

Investigators said that during sustained interrogation, the accused disclosed their involvement in other vehicle theft cases. At their instance, three more stolen scooters were recovered from different locations.

The recovered vehicles were found to be linked to cases registered at Jafrabad, New Usmanpur and Nand Nagri police stations.

With the arrest of the accused and recovery of four stolen two-wheelers, police have solved four motor vehicle theft cases.

Accordingly, proceedings under Section 35.1(e)/106 BNSS were initiated at Bhajanpura Police Station. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the involvement of the accused in other similar cases.

Last week, the Crack Team of Anand Vihar Police Station in Delhi’s Shahdara district arrested two alleged snatchers and auto-lifters and recovered two stolen two-wheelers from their possession.

On June 18, while conducting routine patrol duty near Manglam Road in AGCR Enclave, the police team noticed two suspicious youths riding a CT-100 motorcycle without a registration number plate.

Upon verification, the motorcycle was found to be a stolen vehicle linked to E-FIR No. 013864/26, dated June 16, registered under Section 305(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Farsh Bazar Police Station. Both individuals were immediately taken into custody.
