Gujarat: NCW seeks report in woman’s death case amid charges of forced hysterectomy

Rajkot/New Delhi, June 25 (IANS) The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the death of a 21-year-old woman from Gujarat’s Rajkot and directed the state police to take immediate action after allegations emerged of prolonged physical, psychological and financial exploitation, including claims that she was forced to undergo a hysterectomy.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commission said it had taken cognisance of the death of Nandini Bosamiya, whose death occurred under suspicious circumstances.

The NCW described the incident as “extremely serious and heartbreaking” and said media reports had raised grave concerns about the circumstances leading to her death.

“There were allegations that Bosamiya had been subjected to long-term physical, psychological and financial exploitation,” the commission said.

It also noted claims that she had been deceived and pressured into undergoing a hysterectomy.

According to the NCW, a final message reportedly shared by the woman before her death, along with the circumstances at the scene, had further intensified concerns surrounding the case.

The Commission has written to the Director General of Police (DGP) G.S. Malik seeking immediate and effective action.

It directed that an FIR be registered under appropriate provisions of law and that all accused persons be arrested at the earliest.

The NCW also called for a detailed investigation into the alleged forced hysterectomy, including scrutiny of the role of the medical facility and medical personnel involved.

Further directions include a comprehensive forensic post-mortem examination by a panel of expert doctors, an investigation into the alleged financial exploitation of the victim and efforts to recover any assets or funds involved.

The Commission has also sought a review of an earlier complaint reportedly registered in Junagadh and an examination of any institutional lapses in its handling.

It has asked the Gujarat Police to submit an ‘Action Taken Report’ within seven days. The case has attracted widespread attention after the young woman was found dead at a flat in Rajkot on Wednesday. She was also an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate in the 2025 municipal elections for Jetpur-Navagadh.

Her family has alleged that she was subjected to sustained harassment by a man with whom she was reportedly in a relationship and that previous complaints had been made regarding threats and abuse.

Police initially registered an accidental death case and began an investigation, while a forensic post-mortem examination was conducted to establish the exact cause of death.

Family members have alleged foul play and have called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The NCW said the allegations in the matter were of a serious nature and required prompt, impartial and time-bound investigation.
