‘Attempts being made to shape students through Hindutva ideology’: Congress leader Husain Dalwai

Mumbai, June 25 (IANS) Congress leader Husain Dalwai on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Central government of attempting to “shape students through Hindutva ideology”.

His remarks came after the NCERT incorporated a section on Emergency in the class 9 social science textbooks, five decades after its imposition.

Maintaining that he does not support the imposition of the Emergency, Dalwai said: “There are many issues, all of them should be considered rather than only discussing religious topics. There is now an attempt to shape students through Hindutva ideology. This will lead to the country’s destruction.”

“The country has become similar to Bangladesh or Pakistan. This is extremely wrong. This country had its own culture, identity and standing in the world. People across the globe respected India. Since the time of late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, India had a distinct place in the world, and these (current BJP government) people have worked to destroy that legacy,” he told IANS.

The Congress leader also condemned Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Dina Patil’s behaviour towards the media.

Patil reportedly used abusive language and issued open threats to journalists on camera.

Addressing Sanjay Dina Patil, Husain Dalwai said: “You are not a goon. You are a representative of the people in the Lok Sabha. In your constituency, people voted for you against the BJP because they disagreed with the way the government is functioning today. Those voters were not only from Shiv Sena; a large number were from Congress, NCP, and the Samajwadi Party as well. All these people voted and elected you, and yet you are making such statements.”

He also said that Patil leaving the Shiv Sena’s UBT faction “was itself wrong”.

“After doing so, using abusive language against journalists is also wrong. What does that mean, Are you behaving like local strongmen who try to intimidate people in their area. This is extremely wrong,” he added.

Responding to questions over Ujjain land deals being allegedly linked to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s family, Dalwai urged for a fair investigation into the matter.

Referring to former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s resignation in 2010 in the wake of the Adarsh Housing Society scam, he said: “Congress leaders had to quit even if they were minutely involved in something.”

Demanding the resignation of CM Mohan Yadav, Dalwai added: “The lands were bought at low rates, keeping in mind the upcoming infrastructural development, so according to me he (Chief Minister Mohan Yadav) should definitely resign.”

“If the BJP has any sense of shame, then the Madhya Pradesh CM (Mohan Yadav) should be removed,” he remarked.
