Jabalpur’s peas, singhara earn prestigious GI tags

Jabalpur, Jun 26 (IANS) In a significant development for Madhya Pradesh’s agriculture sector, Jabalpuri Matar (peas) and Jabalpur Singhada (water chestnut) have been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, government officials said on Friday.

This recognition, granted by the GI Registry in Chennai, marks a historic first in India, as Jabalpur becomes the first region in the country where both peas and singhada have received official GI protection.

Jabalpuri peas are already included in the ‘One District-One Product’ (ODOP) scheme of the Central government. Now getting the GI tag will increase its brand value.

Experts believe that having certified products will encourage traders at home and abroad to give better prices to farmers. This is likely to increase the income of farmers.

Jabalpur-based Maikalsuta Farmer Producer Company limited had applied to acquire GI tag for both the agri-produces.

The fertile soils and unique microclimate of the Narmada Valley have long contributed to the exceptional quality, taste, and high productivity of these crops.

Agricultural experts attribute their distinctive flavour and characteristics to the nutrient-rich waters of the Narmada river and the region’s ideal growing conditions.

For years, Jabalpuri peas and singhada have enjoyed strong demand not only in local markets but also across other states, thanks to their superior quality.

With the official registration and publication in the GI Registry’s journal, these products now enjoy legal protection that safeguards their unique geographical identity at national and international levels.

The GI tag is expected to open new doors for farmers by enhancing market visibility, enabling premium pricing, and creating fresh export opportunities. This will significantly boost incomes for local growers and contribute to the overall economic growth of the region.

Experts and horticulture officials described the achievement as groundbreaking as for the first time in India, peas and singhada from any region have been granted GI tags.

This places Jabalpur prominently on the country’s agricultural map, they said.

The GI tag serves as an official endorsement of the quality, reputation, and origin-linked uniqueness of Jabalpuri Matar and Jabalpur Singhada. It joins these products with other renowned GI-tagged items from across India, offering consumers assurance of authenticity while protecting producers from imitation.

This achievement is expected to encourage more farmers to adopt scientific cultivation practices, preserve traditional varieties, and invest in value addition.

Local agricultural bodies and experts believe it will strengthen the rural economy, promote agro-tourism, and position Jabalpur as a hub for high-value, geographically authenticated produce.

Farmers and stakeholders have welcomed the development with enthusiasm, viewing it as a transformative step toward sustainable growth and global recognition for their time-honoured produce.
