New Delhi/Guwahati/Itanagar, June 30 (IANS) Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Tuesday reviewed the flood situation across the Northeast following incessant rainfall over the past several days and assured the affected states of full support from the Centre.

Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also visited Arunachal Pradesh to assess the flood situation in the state.

DoNER Minister Scindia spoke with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh to review the prevailing flood situation and assess the ongoing rescue, relief and restoration efforts in the affected areas.

During the interactions, the Union Minister took stock of the ground situation and assured the Chief Ministers of every possible support and assistance from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) to safeguard lives, strengthen relief operations and restore normalcy at the earliest, an official statement said.

Assam remains among the worst-affected states, with flooding reported in six districts, while Arunachal Pradesh has witnessed flood-related devastation in 12 of its 28 districts following continuous heavy rainfall.

Sikkim and Manipur are also experiencing adverse weather conditions, while Meghalaya remains on alert. Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura continue to be closely monitored in view of the prevailing weather conditions across the region.

The DoNER Ministry is closely monitoring the evolving situation and remains in constant coordination with the concerned state governments and Central agencies to facilitate timely assistance wherever required.

According to the statement, the Union Minister prayed for the safety and well-being of all those affected and reaffirmed the Government of India’s unwavering commitment to working in close coordination with the state governments to minimise the impact of the floods and ensure swift rescue, relief and restoration efforts.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, along with Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Kiren Rijiju, visited the flood-ravaged areas of Hoj and Potin in Keyi Panyor district, where three people have lost their lives so far and two others are still missing.

Taking to social media platform X, Khandu wrote: “To strengthen relief, rehabilitation and post-flood restoration efforts, visited the flood-affected areas of Hoj and Potin in Keyi Panyor district along with Hon’ble Union Ministers Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Ji and Shri Kiren Rijiju Ji.” He said the joint visit reflects the Government of India’s continued support to Arunachal Pradesh during this challenging period.

“We interacted with affected families, reviewed the situation on the ground and assessed the extent of the damage. Our immediate priority is to ensure swift relief for every affected family, restore essential services and expedite the rehabilitation and reconstruction of areas impacted by the floods,” the Chief Minister said.

Khandu said that with this commitment, the team visited the flood-hit areas of Keyi Panyor district to assess the situation firsthand, review the ongoing response and understand the immediate requirements of the affected communities.

The Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his prompt concern and support in deputing the two Union Ministers — Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Kiren Rijiju — to personally assess the situation on the ground.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also thanked DoNER Minister Scindia for speaking with him to assess the flood situation in the state. In a post on X, Sarma said: “Thank you for your call, Hon’ble Union Minister Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia Ji. The recent spell of floods has caused widespread damage in Upper Assam. Our teams are on the ground to review the situation and provide all necessary relief and rehabilitation support.”

He added: “Under the leadership of Adarniya Narendra Modi Ji, the Double Engine Government remains committed to ensuring the welfare of our people.”

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had separately spoken to the Chief Ministers of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh on Monday to review the flood situation in the two Northeastern states and assured them of all possible assistance from the Centre.
