New Delhi, July 1 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested a 2012-batch IPS officer, Deepak Gahlawat of the Haryana cadre, currently posted on Central deputation with the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in Delhi, in connection with an alleged bribery case.

According to the CBI, the agency had registered a case on June 8 against a Delhi Police Inspector and two private individuals.

During the course of the investigation, it allegedly came to light that the IPS officer had demanded illegal gratification, claiming that he could use his personal influence to secure relief for certain private individuals in cases being investigated by the CBI relating to the sale of counterfeit drugs in Puducherry.

Earlier in the investigation, the CBI had arrested the accused Delhi Police Inspector along with six private individuals. The agency had recovered approximately Rs 25 lakh as trap money and seized around Rs 90 lakh in cash, besides several incriminating documents.

The CBI also conducted searches at multiple premises linked to the IPS officer. During the searches, investigators seized several digital devices, hard disks and documents believed to be relevant to the case.

Further investigation is underway, and more details are awaited.

In another recent anti-corruption action, the CBI on June 26 arrested the manager of Punjab National Bank’s Bhadrauli branch in Agra’s Barhan area of Uttar Pradesh in an alleged bribery case.

According to the agency, the case was registered on June 25 following a complaint by an employee of a private company. The complainant alleged that the bank manager demanded Rs 7,000 per loan file to process and clear around 19 solar panel loan applications. After negotiations, the accused allegedly agreed to accept a total bribe of Rs 52,000 for clearing the loan files, which had already been sanctioned by the bank.

Earlier, on June 14, the CBI also arrested a senior section engineer of the Northeast Frontier Railway in Assam’s Silchar for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a complainant.
