Guwahati, July 1 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced the opening of a FIFA Club World Cup Fan Park in Dibrugarh, extending the state’s football viewing experience beyond Guwahati and providing enthusiasts another venue to watch the tournament on giant screens.
Sharing the development on social media, the Chief Minister said the initiative aims to bring football lovers together, irrespective of their favourite clubs, and promote the spirit of sportsmanship.
“Divided by team loyalty, united by the spirit of football. After Guwahati, Assam’s second capital, Dibrugarh, has opened its doors to the CM FIFA Fan Park, which brings an unparalleled match experience on a large screen for people to enjoy their favourite game together,” Sarma said in a post.
The newly inaugurated Fan Park has been designed as a public viewing arena where football fans can gather to watch live FIFA Club World Cup matches on large LED screens in a festive atmosphere.
According to the Chief Minister, the initiative seeks to create a shared sporting experience for people of all age groups while encouraging greater public participation in football, one of the world’s most popular sports.
The opening of the Dibrugarh Fan Park comes after a similar facility was launched in Guwahati, where football enthusiasts have been gathering to watch live matches and celebrate the tournament.
Officials said the state government intends to promote sports culture by creating public spaces where families and young people can enjoy major international sporting events together.
Assam has witnessed growing interest in football over the past few years, with the government investing in sports infrastructure, organising international-standard events and encouraging youth participation in various disciplines.
The state has also hosted several national and international sporting events in recent years as part of its efforts to position Assam as a sporting destination in the Northeast.
The Chief Minister invited football lovers to visit the newly opened Fan Park in Dibrugarh and experience the excitement of live FIFA Club World Cup action alongside fellow fans, describing it as an opportunity to celebrate the game in a vibrant community setting.
