Hyderabad, July 9 (IANS) Two women waiting for a bus were killed as a pickup vehicle overturned and rammed into a bus stop at Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Thursday, police said.

The vehicle loaded with vegetables hit the people waiting for the bus by the roadside at Satamrai in Shamshabad mandal of Ranga Reddy district on the Hyderabad-Bengaluru national highway.

According to police, the vehicle lost control and overturned while trying to overtake a bus. It rammed into those waiting at the Road Transport Corporation (RTC) bus stop, killing two women on the spot.

Police personnel from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) Police Station rushed to the spot and shifted the bodies to the Osmania General Hospital (OGH) mortuary for post-mortem examination.

The deceased were identified as Suma and Swarna, both residents of Satamrai.

Police said the vehicle loaded with vegetables was heading towards Hyderabad when the accident occurred.

The accident led to a massive traffic jam on the busy highway. Police registered a case and took up the investigation.

Locals expressed their ire over the failure of the authorities to prevent road accidents. They demanded zebra crossings and speed breakers, stating that accidents frequently occur in this area.

Local residents also demanded that the authorities erect barricades at the bus stop.

Meanwhile, a truck was gutted in a fire in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday. The accident occurred on the Achuthapuram-Marturu highway early in the morning

The truck driver had a narrow escape in the accident. According to police, the vehicle caught fire due to a suspected short circuit.

The alert driver noticed the smoke, stopped the truck and jumped out. The flames erupted rapidly, and the entire vehicle was gutted.

Fire-fighting personnel reached the spot with a fire engine and brought the blaze under control.

The accident led to a traffic jam on the highway. Police later removed the debris to restore the movement of vehicles.
