Guwahati, July 10 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the state government has set an ambitious target of positioning Assam among the top 10 states in the country in terms of tourist footfall, announcing a series of measures in the 2026-27 Budget to strengthen tourism infrastructure and attract more domestic and international visitors.

Speaking to reporters here after the presentation of the state Budget by Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah in the Assembly, CM Sarma said Assam’s tourism sector has witnessed remarkable growth over the past few years and the government is committed to sustaining the momentum through fresh policy initiatives and investments.

“Assam’s tourism sector is growing by leaps and bounds with the support of national and international patrons who are choosing Awesome Assam as their favourite destination. We are committed to further boost this sector,” the Chief Minister said.

Highlighting the Budget proposals, CM Sarma said the government has fixed a target of placing Assam among India’s top 10 states in tourist arrivals.

At present, the state receives more than 76 lakh domestic tourist visits annually, and the government expects the number to rise substantially with improved connectivity and enhanced tourism facilities.

To encourage community-based tourism, the government will introduce a new Homestay Policy under which eligible beneficiaries will receive a 30 per cent capital subsidy along with a two per cent interest subvention to set up homestay facilities.

CM Sarma said the initiative is aimed at generating employment opportunities in rural and semi-urban areas while providing tourists with authentic local experiences.

The Budget also proposes the development of five-star hotels in Umrangso, Haflong and Manas to strengthen high-end tourism infrastructure and cater to the growing demand from domestic as well as international travellers.

According to the Chief Minister, the government is focusing on creating world-class tourism infrastructure while preserving Assam’s rich cultural heritage, wildlife and natural attractions.

The tourism initiatives form part of the government’s broader strategy to promote Assam as a global tourism destination and make the sector a major contributor to the state’s economy, employment generation and sustainable development.
