Bankipur bypoll: JJD candidate Veena Manvi arrested on old warrant, granted bail

Patna, July 13 (IANS) A significant political and legal development unfolded in Patna after Veena Manvi, a candidate of Tej Pratap Yadav’s Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD), was arrested by Gandhi Maidan Police in connection with a pending court warrant issued in an older criminal case. Later the same day, she received relief after being produced before a court, which granted her bail.

According to police, Manvi was wanted in Case No. 837/2009, in which a complaint had been filed before the civil court. Police said a non-bailable warrant had been issued against her by the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC-9), Court No. 26, on February 26 this year. Acting on the warrant, Gandhi Maidan Police arrested her.

The case reportedly includes allegations under section 403 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), dishonest misappropriation of property, and section 418 of the IPC, cheating with knowledge that wrongful loss may result. Patna police also stated that another fraud-related case involving Manvi was scheduled for hearing before the ACJM-7 court on the same day.

Following her arrest, Manvi was taken for a mandatory medical examination and later produced before the JMFC-9 court in the presence of Gandhi Maidan SHO Akhilesh Mishra. After hearing submissions from both sides, the court granted her bail.

According to police records, Manvi has faced multiple criminal cases in the past. Officials stated that a case of alleged forgery and cheating was registered against her at Kankarbagh Police Station in 2016, and complaints have also been registered in connection with alleged offences under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and cybercrime laws. These are allegations recorded in police cases, and their merits are subject to judicial proceedings.

Manvi’s counsel, Nisha Singh, questioned the manner in which the arrest was carried out. According to the defence, legal formalities were already being completed before the court when police took her into custody. The lawyer also stated that details of the cases against her had already been disclosed in accordance with legal requirements.

The arrest took place on the final day of nominations for the Bankipur Assembly by-election, shortly after Manvi filed her nomination papers. The timing of the arrest sparked political reactions, with JJD chief Tej Pratap Yadav earlier alleging it was politically motivated. However, police have maintained that the arrest was carried out to execute a court-issued non-bailable warrant.

With the court now granting bail, the legal proceedings in the pending cases will continue in accordance with the law.
