Identify masterminds: Kerala BJP chief demands probe into death threat to party MLA

Thiruvananthapuram, July 15 (IANS) Kerala BJP President and MLA Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Wednesday called for a comprehensive investigation into the alleged conspiracy behind the death threat issued against the Legislature Party leader and Chathannoor MLA, B.B. Gopakumar, stating that the incident cannot be treated as a mere case of a threatening phone call.

According to the FIR registered by Chathannoor Police, a case has been booked after Gopakumar received a phone call in which he was allegedly threatened with death.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar said reports suggesting that the call was made ‘using’ a person suffering from mental health issues are extremely serious.

If that is indeed the case, he said, it is the responsibility of the police to identify those who allegedly orchestrated the conspiracy by using such a person as the front engine.

He further pointed out that Gopakumar had recently raised in the Kerala Assembly the issue of both the Left and the Congress-led Opposition allegedly adopting a similar stand in support of Kerala-based Peoples Democratic Party leader Abdul Nasser Madani, whom he described as an accused in terror-related cases.

According to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the government subsequently removed Gopakumar’s remarks from the Assembly records.

He said the death threat followed these developments, and therefore investigators must examine whether there is any connection between the two incidents and whether a larger conspiracy was involved.

The BJP leader asserted that the investigation should not end with merely arresting the individual who made the threatening phone call.

Instead, the police must identify and prosecute those who allegedly planned, instigated or facilitated the threat.

“A death threat against an elected representative is a challenge to democracy itself. Such incidents should neither be trivialised nor should the investigation be diverted from uncovering the truth,” he said.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar urged the Kerala Police to conduct a thorough investigation into every aspect of the alleged conspiracy, identify the real masterminds behind the threat, and take exemplary legal action against all those responsible.
