Assam govt in talks with Aditya Dhar for Lachit Borphukan’s biopic: CM Sarma

Guwahati, July 16 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the state government is holding discussions with filmmaker Aditya Dhar to direct a high‑budget biographical film on legendary Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan, to take the story of one of Assam’s greatest heroes to audiences across India and abroad.

Speaking during a Facebook Live interaction, Sarma said the government is keen to support the making of a Bollywood‑scale feature film depicting the life and legacy of the 17th‑century military strategist, whose leadership led the Ahom army to a historic victory over the Mughal forces in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671.

The Chief Minister said he is scheduled to meet National Award‑winning filmmaker Aditya Dhar in August to discuss the proposed project in detail.

Sarma clarified that discussions are still at a preliminary stage and no final decision has been taken. He added that if Dhar is unable to take up the project, the government will approach other filmmakers to ensure that the biopic is made on a grand scale.

“If Aditya Dhar is not available, we will explore other options. Our priority is to make a world‑class film on Lachit Borphukan that does justice to his extraordinary legacy,” Sarma said.

According to him, the proposed film is intended not only to honour the iconic Ahom general but also to introduce Assam’s rich historical heritage to a wider national and international audience.

If the project moves forward, it would become the first Bollywood‑scale feature film backed by the Assam government on the life of Lachit Borphukan.

Widely revered in Assam, Lachit Borphukan is remembered as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and military brilliance.

His decisive role in defeating the Mughal forces at the Battle of Saraighat remains one of the most celebrated chapters in the state’s history.
