Kolkata, Aug 10 (IANS) Trinamool Congress MLAs on Monday staged a protest in West Bengal Legislative Assembly premises over the attack on former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday at Halisahar in North 24 Parganas district. The MLAs raised slogans against the BJP government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and the police administration, demanding justice for Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee and vowed to take out protest rallies across Bengal today. They also slammed the police over the custodial death of a Trinamool Congress worker in Halisahar.

The protest march was led by senior leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, Kunal Ghosh, Biman Banerjee, Nayna Bandyopadhyay and others. The MLAs also held a banner and posters which denounced the attack on Mamata Banerjee.

Following the attack, the original but minority faction of the Trinamool Congress has decided to take out protest rallies across the state today. The protest march will be held in all the blocks of the state.

According to a party insider, the Trinamool Congress is trying to intensify its movement in the entire West Bengal focussing on yesterday’s incident.

It is worth noting that the police of Halisahar police station arrested Birju Keot, the husband of former Trinamool Congress councillor of ward number 23 of Kanchrapara Municipality, on various charges, including extortion.

He was also produced in court on Friday and the judge ordered his five-day police custody.

However, on Saturday, it was revealed that Birju Keot had died in police custody. Jenny alleged that her husband died after being beaten up by the police inside the lock up.

On Sunday, Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee went to Kanchrapara to meet the family of the deceased Trinamool Congress worker Birju Keot. She was accompanied by Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee and Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen.

However, she faced protests on the way. It is alleged that shoes and mud were hurled at her vehicle. Mamata claimed that BJP-backed miscreants were responsible for the act.

Bricks and stones were also thrown at the car. Mamata claimed that had the windows been open, she could have suffered a head injury or even lost her life.
