Kolkata, Aug 17 (IANS) As the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led West Bengal government is all set to complete its first 100 days in power on Tuesday, preparations are in full swing within the state administration to highlight in detail the work done by the new state government during that period.
Insiders from the state secretariat of Nabanna said that the first achievement to be highlighted by the West Bengal government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, will be the near completion of the process of handing over of land to the Border Security Force (BSF) to erect barbed fencing in unfenced borders with neighbouring Bangladesh in different districts of the state.
As per figures provided by the state Land and Land Revenue Department, which is under control of the Chief Minister, more than 767 acres of land has already been handed over to the BSF in nine border districts.
It is learnt that in addition, the state Cabinet has approved the transfer of about 362 acres of land. As a result, the amount of land given to the BSF has crossed 1,100 acres.
Apart from this, more than 44 acres of land has been given to the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts for border security and another 110 acres of land has been given to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) battalion headquarters in Darjeeling.
Insiders from the state secretariat said that the second highlight point will be quick provisions of land for different infrastructure projects like Sevak-Rangpo broad gauge rail project, a 100-bed ESI hospital in West Medinipur district and small land parcels for different infrastructure projects, government warehouses and electricity substations among others.
The third highlight point will be the reopening of 16 closed jute mills in the state during the first 100 days.
Next will come the details of the foundation stones laid for different projects in the state along with the details of their investments and estimated employment generation through those projects.
The state government is also planning to highlight in a major way the instruction of free-rides for women in state-run buses, as well as increasing the number of public buses in each route.
As per the election promise, the new state government has also launched the ‘Annapurna Yojana’. As promised, women are now getting Rs 3,000 under that scheme, which is double the amount of Rs 1,500 paid under the ‘Lakshmir Bhandar’ scheme during the previous Trinamool Congress regime.
However, there is criticism that because of the in-depth screening process to weed out ineligible people, many genuine beneficiaries have been left out of this scheme.
The state government and the ruling party have, however, assured that the government has made efforts to ensure that those who are legitimate claimants but have not yet received the benefits of the ‘Annapurna Yojana’ will get the benefits of the scheme at the earliest.
The next highlight point will be linking the state with separate centrally-sponsored projects like ‘Ayushman Bharat’, which was not allowed during the previous Trinamool Congress regime as the Mamata Banerjee government had its own health scheme running at that time.
Those who are not entitled for Ayushman Bharat will be covered under the Chief Minister’s Health Insurance now.
Last but not the least, the government will highlight its different initiatives to improve the law and order situation in the state, including the passing of the recently-promulgated West Bengal Public Safety & Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026, with the aim to prevent rowdy activities and corruption in the state.
