Jaipur, August 18 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP Satish Poonia has been handed two major organisational responsibilities within 24 hours.
After being appointed the party’s National General Secretary in the team of newly elected BJP President Nitin Nabin on Monday, Poonia was named the party’s Punjab In-charge on Tuesday.
The Rajya Sabha MP has thanked the BJP’s central leadership after being appointed the party’s new state in-charge for Punjab.
He said the responsibility reflects the confidence the party leadership has placed in him and asserted that underestimating the BJP in Punjab would be a mistake.
Speaking after his appointment, Poonia discussed the political situation in Punjab and claimed that there is growing public dissatisfaction with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
He said an undercurrent of support for the BJP is visible.
Poonia added that the BJP will focus on strengthening its organisational structure in Punjab and intensify preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.
He expressed confidence that the party is in a strong position to perform well in the state.
Poonia also targeted the AAP government over the drug menace and law and order situation in Punjab.
He claimed that these issues have contributed to public resentment and that anti-incumbency sentiment is emerging against the state government in Punjab.
He said the BJP would enter the electoral contest with full strength and work towards forming the government on its own in Punjab.
Referring to his experience in Haryana, Poonia added that the BJP provides both organisational and political training to its workers.
“I learned a great deal in Haryana and implemented it on the ground. The success in Haryana was not the work of any single individual; it was the result of an excellent team and full support from the Centre,” he said.
Poonia also highlighted the guidance provided by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on grassroots-level organisational work.
He described it as a matter of pride for an ordinary party worker to be entrusted with major responsibilities such as National General Secretary and Punjab in-charge.
Discussing the political landscape, Poonia identified two major challenges for the BJP in Punjab: taking on the AAP government and competing against the Congress, which has a decades-old political presence in the state.
He indicated that strengthening the BJP and expanding its political base would be key priorities ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections in Punjab.
Poonia’s appointment to two important positions on consecutive days is significant for the BJP’s strategy in Punjab.
Poonia will play a key role in strengthening the BJP’s organisation and shaping its electoral strategy in the state while continuing his national-level organisational responsibilities.
His role is likely to remain closely watched as the BJP prepares for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections.
