The strengthening partnership between Australia and India was in focus at a National Day Reception hosted by the Consulate General of India in Brisbane to mark India’s 80th Independence Day.
The reception, held on August 16, brought together Queensland Government ministers, local councillors, members of the Diplomatic Corps and representatives of the Indian community.
Among the dignitaries present were Fiona Simpson MP, Minister for Multiculturalism; Ros Bates MP, Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training; Andrew Powell MP, Minister for the Environment and Tourism and Minister for Science and Innovation; Cr Sarah Hutton, representing the Lord Mayor of Brisbane; Cameron Dick MP, Deputy Leader of the Opposition; and Jon Krause MP, representing the Speaker of the Queensland Parliament.
High Commissioner of India to Australia Nagesh Singh and Consul General of India in Brisbane Neetu Bhagotia addressed the gathering, with their remarks highlighting India’s economic growth and the expanding relationship between Australia and India.
The reception featured cultural performances celebrating India’s rich and diverse heritage. A special fashion presentation, “Alluring India”, curated by designer Vinay Gupta, showcased Indian textiles, traditional craftsmanship and clothing.
A fashion walk involving local councillors was another highlight of the evening, adding a distinctive community element to the cultural programme.
The reception brought together political, diplomatic and community representatives to celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day while showcasing the deepening bilateral relationship and strong people-to-people links between Australia and India.
