Imphal, Sep 5 (IANS) Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said on Saturday that despite the state having faced several challenges and ethnic crises, there are now signs that peace is gradually returning, referring to the prevailing ethnic situation in the state.

Addressing the state-level Teachers’ Day celebration, the Chief Minister noted that bandhs, agitations and blockades ultimately cause hardship to the people and adversely affect the economy and education sector.

“Peace can only be restored and issues can only be resolved through negotiation,” he added.

The Chief Minister said that Teachers’ Day reminds everyone that teaching is not merely a profession but a noble responsibility and a national duty.

He added that the highest character of a teacher lies in treating every student with the same care and concern as a member of one’s own family and also appreciated the dedication and commitment of teachers, noting that every teacher has a unique way of contributing towards society by educating and guiding young minds.

The Chief Minister recalled his interaction with student leaders recently, saying that they remained responsible as students and did not resort to agitation.

He appreciated their decision not to participate in the bandh called in connection with the issue.

Manipur Chief Secretary Rajeev Singh Thakur, in his address, stressed the importance of education in shaping the future of children and society.

He said that when a child receives a good education, it opens the way for a better future, adding that generations are shaped through the process of education.

During the celebration, the Chief Minister presented the State Teachers’ Awards, 2026, to six teachers.

The awarded teachers are Oinam Ranjit Singh, Salam Sunita Devi, R. K. Badal Singh, Hanjabam Sangeeta Devi, Phelim Keishing and Kakchingtabam Pramodini Deviwhile and M Mangkhoneng Haokip with each recipient receiving a cash award of Rs 50,000.

The Chief Minister’s Educational Award for Educational Excellence was also presented to eight colleges.
