PM Malcolm Turnbull abolishes 457 visas for foreign workers, weeks before the Budget. 457 work visa program, which was introduced by John Howard’s government in 1996, allowed overseas workers to stay in Australia for up to four years.
On 18 April 2017, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, Prime Minister of Australia and the Hon Peter Dutton MP, Minister for Immigration and Border Protection jointly announced that the Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457 visa) will be abolished. 457 work visa will be replaced with the completely new Temporary Skilled Shortage (TSS) visa, which will support businesses in addressing genuine skill shortages.
‘Australian workers must have priority for Australian jobs,’ Mr Turnbull said.
Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said the shock decision won’t affect current Australian visa holders. ‘There will be a grandfathering arrangement. They will continue under the conditions of that visa.’

TSS visa will support businesses in addressing genuine skill shortages in their workforce and will contain a number of safeguards to prioritise Australian workers.
