Kolkata, Jan 22 (IANS) Tension erupted in Rajberia village under Beraberi panchayat in Ashoknagar in North 24 Parganas district after the hanging body of a young man was recovered on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Monirul Goldar (37). His body was found hanging from a mango tree near his house. The family alleged that the incident was triggered by fear of “digital arrest”.
Although no phone calls or social media contact were involved in this case, the family said a notice was sent to his home alleging that he had committed a crime using a SIM card. According to them, Monirul was worried about the notice and they claimed this was the reason he took the extreme step.
A complaint has already been filed at the local Ashoknagar police station. Police have started an investigation based on the complaint. The officers are trying to ascertain who sent the notice.
According to local and family sources, Monirul, a resident of Rajberia village in Ashoknagar, was a honey trader by profession. He reportedly received the notice at his home on January 8.
Monirul’s neighbour, Mokkadesh Mandal, told local reporters: “The notice came through the post office, supposedly from the Pune City Cyber Police Station in Maharashtra. It stated that a SIM card had been registered in Monirul’s name and used for criminal activities. He was instructed to contact them within seven days. After that, Monirul was very frightened. He had also informed the police about the incident.”
It was learnt that Monirul left home on Wednesday night, packing his clothes in a bag, saying he was going elsewhere for honey collection. On Thursday morning, his hanging body was found on a mango tree behind a tea stall near the Suria playground, a short distance from his house.
Following this, his family alleged that the man died by suicide due to fear of “digital arrest” triggered by the notice.
On this, Gupi Majumdar, a Trinamool Congress member of the Habra II Panchayat Samiti, said: “The young man became terrified after receiving the notice. His family members said that Monirul had been using the same mobile number from the beginning. A complaint has been filed at the police station detailing everything. The truth will come out through the police investigation.”
The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the family.
