Bollywood is India’s Hollywood, a film industry that differentiates itself through lively musical numbers that extend a film’s typical viewing time to between 2-3 hours long. Bollywood films often involve colourful costumes and musical numbers with hundreds of dancers, and tend to feature family values and high melodrama. Recently, the industry celebrated 100 years of filmmaking.
You may know all about Bollywood, but did you know that Brisbane is the home to a thriving Indian dance scene? Bollywood dance is a mix of Indian classical styles (much like ballet), folk styles and Western styles. “These days almost anything can be Bollywood,” BADC Director Paviter Kumar Noori emphasises. “So long as it’s to Bollywood Music, almost anything goes!”
Mr Noori and Andrea Lam are the co-producers of Bollywood Australia Dance Competition, an event that will span over three days and showcase the limitless glamour, melodrama and energy of Indian dance. “We saw such tremendous talent within the Indian dance population of Brisbane,” Miss Lam says. “Dancers are incredibly underrated. If they make it look too easy, people assume it is easy to do without taking into account the years of training required to make it look easy. We have enormous respect for this and really want to create a platform where dancers can be showcased, and Bollywood dancers can connect with each other, as well as with the wider Brisbane dance scene.”
The BADC Directors have put together an incredible judging panel of local and international dance artists including SonaliBhadauria, one of India’s most prominent independent choreographers and viral YouTube sensation; as well as Ramona Lobo, Sydney-based Bollywood choreographer for SYTYCD Australia and Bollywood Star; WanidaSerce, Director of Pink Matter; Sammie Williams, Independent Artist and Co-Director of Elements Collective; and Helena Joshi, Director of Infinity Kathak. “The idea is not only to have a place for the Indian dance community to be showcased, but to also connect with the larger community of dancers to skillshare, collaborate, or to simply see what else is out there,” says Mr Noori.
The Bollywood Australia Dance Competition promises to be a highly entertaining show featuring performances from WanidaSerce’s company Pink Matter, Dr Helena Joshi, Dance Masala and Circa – with tickets available now through Eventbrite!
