Perth, June 2 (Australia India News Newsdesk)

The rich literary and cultural heritage of Bengal was celebrated in Perth as the Bengali Association of Western Australia organised Rabindra and Nazrul Jayanti, commemorating the birth anniversaries of two of the subcontinent’s most revered cultural figures, Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam.

The Consul General attended the event, which brought together members of the Bengali community and admirers of the two literary giants whose works continue to influence generations across the world.

The celebration highlighted the immense contribution of Bengali language and culture to global literature, music and human thought. Through poetry, songs, performances and reflections on their lives, participants honoured the enduring legacy of Tagore and Nazrul.

Rabindranath Tagore, celebrated as a poet, philosopher, composer and Nobel laureate, remains one of the most influential figures in modern literature. Kazi Nazrul Islam, affectionately known as the “Rebel Poet”, is remembered for his powerful writings that championed freedom, equality and social justice.

Speakers at the event noted that the works of both men transcend national and cultural boundaries, carrying timeless messages of humanism, compassion and harmony.

The Consul General commended the Bengali Association of Western Australia for preserving and promoting Bengali cultural traditions while fostering community engagement in Australia’s multicultural society.

Organisers said the annual observance serves not only as a celebration of two extraordinary lives but also as an opportunity to introduce younger generations to the values and artistic achievements that continue to define Bengali cultural identity.

The programme reflected the continuing relevance of Tagore’s and Nazrul’s writings and music, which remain a source of inspiration for people around the world.

The event concluded with a tribute to the lasting influence of the two literary icons, whose contributions to literature, music and human values continue to enrich global culture and inspire audiences far beyond Bengal.
