Ever thought that onions could make you sick? Well, it’s true. It has been recently discovered that sliced onions encourage the growth of disease-causing bacterium. When we consume them, we also consume these microbes and fall sick.
Leftover Onions Attract Microbes
Sliced onions kept in the open are a breeding ground for bacteria. When we eat such onions, we also gobble the microbes on them. These microbes, on entering our body, interfere with our digestive process and cause food poisoning and other stomach ailments.
Refrigeration of the leftover onions also can do no good. Neither air-tight packing nor low temperatures of the freezer can hinder the bacterial growth on sliced onions. Once cut open, consume your onions right away. Never take the risk of having the leftover onions the following day.
Properly Cooked Onions Safe
Raw onions are a rich growth medium for the microbes. As soon as an onion is cut open, its moist surface attracts bacterium. But, if properly cooked at right temperatures, the microbes get killed and the onion is absolutely safe for consumption.
Next time you order hotdogs or burgers, don’t forget to ask them to use fresh onions, not the stale ones.
