China, Japan and South Korea win opening Sudirman Cup matches
With defending champions China hitting the courts over 2000 fans over both sessions flocked to the Gold Coast’s Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium to watch the first day of competition at the 2017 Total BWF Surdiman Cup.
Geraldine Brown, President Badminton Australia and President Badminton Oceania said “I was astounded with the number of people who came out for the first day of the event. There was such a buzz and the crowd were having a great time.”
China, Japan and South Korea all won their first round qualifying matches and
megastar of the sport ‘Super Dan’ Lin Dan was greeted by excited fans as he took to the courts for the first time in the competition, scoring a point for his team as China beat Hong Kong 4-1 in their group match.

Entertainment for the opening day of the tournament included Chinese Lion Dancers, Indonesian “Ronggeng” dancers, Japanese Drummers and Fijian Island Dancers organised by the Gold Coast community organisation.
Tickets to the TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup tournament start at $35 with children U15 free accompanied by a paying adult for the first six days of competition. General ticket packages for the Final are priced at $75. Finals premium packages have sold out.
