If you’ve been anywhere close to Northcote or Thornbury in Melbourne’s north, you’ve likely stumbled across Welcome to Thornbury, Daragh Kan and Myles Munro’s giant beer garden and food-truck park that hosts a rotating list of trucks from the Victorian capital and Geelong.
Opening in 2015, on any given night you might find Ramen on Wheels, Brazilian Bites, Los Diablos, Señor Churro or Kan and Munro’s own Mr Burger parked in the former Mini factory’s front yard, flipping food for up to 700 people on busy nights.
Now, Kan and Munro’s 100 Burgers Group is bringing the concept to Brisbane, repurposing Brisbane Showgrounds’ Dairy Hall and Sugar Building from mid-February to create Welcome to Bowen Hills.
A permanent indoor bar area designed by Brisbane’s award-winning Alexander Lotersztain will serve craft beers, jugs of cocktails and feature a separate boutique gin bar called Swill. Outside, the food trucks will rotate daily, with applications for vendors already open.
Kan said in a news release that the response to Welcome to Thornbury was so remarkable that it was always the plan to roll it out elsewhere.
“Outdoor drinking and dining is such an essential part of the Queensland lifestyle so we’re confident that Brisbanites will flock to Welcome to Bowen Hills,” he said.
It will be another win for King Street, which is already on a tear with The Lamb Shop, Supercombo and Banoi recently moving into the precinct, and version two of Montrachet set to open early next month.
