After unrest in Ahmedabad, 4-member SIT set up to probe youth’s murder

Ahmedabad, April 19 (IANS) A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been set up to probe the killing of a 30-year-old man in Dhandhuka town of Ahmedabad district, as police widened their investigation and intensified action following unrest triggered by the incident.

Confirming to IANS, Ahmedabad Rural Superintendent of Police (SP) Om Prakash Jat said the SIT has been constituted under a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) to ensure a thorough and impartial probe.

The team comprises DySP Prakash Prajapati, Inspectors Raghu Karmatiya and Karan Vihol, and Sub-Inspector S.H. Zala.

“They will monitor the investigation on a daily basis and submit weekly progress reports. The purpose of the SIT is to carry out a flawless investigation and ensure timely justice to the victim,” Jat told IANS.

Police have arrested the two main accused, identified as Samir and Rizwan, and registered a murder case against them.

A separate case has been filed against nearly 125 unidentified persons for rioting, arson and vandalism, while at least 25 individuals have been detained in connection with the violence.

Police said the incident began when a motorcycle driven by Samir, who was travelling with his wife, was involved in a minor collision with the bike of a local youth from the Bharwad community.

During the clash, Rizwan allegedly attacked Dharmesh Gamara with a knife, causing severe injuries. He later died due to excessive bleeding.

The killing led to widespread unrest, with mobs damaging shops, vehicles and other properties.

Police have deployed around 200 personnel across sensitive areas and carried out overnight combing operations, including house-to-house checks.

CCTV footage is being analysed to identify those involved in the violence, and strict checking has been enforced at entry and exit points.

Cyber teams are also monitoring social media to curb rumours. SP Jat said the incident was not linked to any communal or social tension.

“This is not a social or communal dispute. It was a personal altercation between two individuals over a minor issue,” he said.

He added that the situation is now under control and normalcy is returning.

The last rites of Dharmesh Gamara were conducted under tight security, while police maintained a heavy presence in the town.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and not pay heed to rumours, stating that action will be taken against all those involved in the crime and subsequent violence.
