Anant Singh, Gunjan Singh get anticipatory bail in Gopalganj arms brandishing case

Patna, June 15 (IANS) The special MP-MLA court in Gopalganj on Monday granted anticipatory bail to Anant Singh and Bhojpuri singer Gunjan Singh in a high-profile case related to the alleged brandishing of weapons and performance of obscene songs during a public ceremony in Bihar.

The matter pertains to an Upanayan Sanskar (thread ceremony) organised on May 2 in Semrao village under the jurisdiction of Mirganj Police Station.

Controversy erupted after a video from the event went viral on social media, allegedly showing weapons being displayed openly and objectionable songs being performed during the ceremony.

Following the circulation of the video, police registered an FIR against several individuals, including Anant Singh and Gunjan Singh.

The anticipatory bail pleas were heard by the special MP-MLA court presided over by ADJ-3 in Gopalganj.

After hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defence, the court granted relief to all named accused.

Defence counsel Kumar Harshvardhan Pathak argued before the court that the viral video appeared edited and suspicious in nature.

He further contended that investigators had neither produced any Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report nor recovered any weapons allegedly used in the incident.

According to the defence, the FIR was registered without adequate evidence, and the allegations were based primarily on an unverified viral clip circulating on social media.

The court’s decision has provided significant legal relief to both Anant Singh and Gunjan Singh, while the investigation into the matter continues.

Authorities have already transferred the probe to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

Attention is now focused on the CID inquiry and the findings that may emerge from the forensic and investigative review of the viral video and related allegations.

Anant Kumar Singh is an MLA from Patna’s Mokama Assembly constituency. He has been facing charges of murder and criminal conspiracy in the Dularchand Yadav murder case that took place during the run-up to the Bihar Assembly Election 2025.

He was lodged in jail and is currently on bail in that case, too.
