Ancient Shivaling emerges during tunnel excavation near Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain

Bhopal, May 1 (IANS) A profound discovery has stirred both the spiritual and archaeological communities in Ujjain as a pristine Shivaling was unearthed during tunnel excavation work near the iconic Mahakaleshwar Temple on early Friday.

This find, occurring in the heart of the ancient city known as the ‘Land of Mahakal’, has immediately drawn massive crowds of devotees and prompted a pause in construction activities to allow for expert evaluation.

The discovery took place while workers were engaged in subterranean digging as part of an infrastructure project aimed at improving pilgrim facilities around the temple complex.

As the heavy machinery cleared a layer of ancient soil several metres below the surface, the stone structure emerged, appearing largely intact despite the passage of centuries.

Preliminary observations suggest the artifact bears the distinct characteristics of traditional temple architecture, possibly dating back several hundred years, though an official timeline is currently being established.

Local authorities and representatives from the Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee reached the site shortly after the news broke. The area has been cordoned off to protect the integrity of the site, as the potential for further archaeological remains is high given Ujjain’s dense history as a centre of Vedic civilisation.

The discovery is particularly poginant for locals, who view it as a divine manifestation in a city that has served as a primary seat of Shaivism for millennia.

Archaeological Survey of India officials have been notified to lead a formal investigation. Experts will examine the stone quality, carving style, and the surrounding strata to determine if the Shivaling belonged to an ancient temple destroyed or buried during historical shifts.

For now, the excavation remains halted as the community gathers to offer prayers at the site of the emergence, turning a construction zone into a makeshift point of pilgrimage.

While the technical analysis is just beginning, the discovery adds a new chapter to the storied legacy of Ujjain.

It reinforces the city’s reputation as a place where the modern world and ancient divinity frequently intersect, reminding the public that much of India’s spiritual heritage still lies waiting to be discovered beneath the feet of its modern inhabitants.
