Amaravati, July 14 (IANS) A police head constable was killed in a suspected hit-and-run case in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool town on Tuesday, police said.

An unidentified vehicle hit the head constable while he was jogging on a flyover on the national highway early in the morning.

The policeman fell on the road under the flyover and died on the spot. He was identified as Varaprasad Reddy (43), a head constable serving in the second battalion of Andhra Pradesh Special Police (APSP).

According to police, the incident occurred near Bellari Chowrasta.

Police shifted the body to the government hospital for post-mortem examination.

State Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha expressed grief over the death of the head constable in the hit-and-run case. She said it was painful to lose a police officer who served with dedication in the line of duty. She conveyed her heartfelt condolences to his family members and assured them that the government would stand by them and ensure all necessary support.

The minister directed officials to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident and take appropriate action regarding the causes of the accident.

Home Minister Anitha prayed for peace for Vara Prasad Reddy’s soul and for strength and courage to his family members.

Varaprasad Reddy was the second policeman killed in road accidents in the state in three days.

A police constable was killed and three others injured after a car went out of control in Prakasam district on July 12.

The accident occurred in Ongole town on the bypass road when the car driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the constable who was going on a bicycle.

The Armed Reserve constable Mariyadas (36) fell on the service road, sustained critical injuries and died on the spot.

After hitting the bicycle, the car rammed into an autorickshaw carrying garbage and a two-wheeler. Three other persons sustained minor injuries.
