Srinagar, June 9 (IANS) Police in J&K’s Baramulla district said on Tuesday that it has foiled movement of weapons in the district and recovered arms and ammunition.

A police statement said that in a significant breakthrough against the unlawful possession and movement of arms, Baramulla police, in a joint operation with 52 Rashtriya Rifles, recovered an illegal foreign-made pistol during a Mobile Vehicle Checking Point (MVCP) established at Chandsuma, Kanispora, near the FCI Godown on Sunday.

During checking, a white car bearing registration number JK02DN-6527, travelling from Srinagar towards Baramulla, was intercepted for inspection. The vehicle was carrying two occupants.

During a thorough search, a pistol — CANIK TP9SF METE (9×19 mm), manufactured in Turkey — was recovered from a bag carried by the co-passenger, who failed to produce any valid licence or legal authorisation for possession of the weapon.

The accused was identified as Wakeel Ahmed Theekri, son of Noor-ud-Din Theekri, resident of Kamalkot, Uri. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the driver was providing a ride to Theekri and claimed no knowledge of the weapon.

Accordingly, FIR No. 70/2026 under Sections 7/25 of the Arms Act was registered at Police Station Baramulla, the weapon seized, and an investigation was set into motion to ascertain its source, intended use, and possible links.

During the course of its investigation and at the instance of the arrested accused, Baramulla police on Monday conducted a search operation at Kalsi Hardu, Kamalkot, in the presence of an Executive Magistrate, the local Lambardar, and a chowkidar, and recovered a Chinese-made pistol, two magazines, and 13 live rounds of ammunition, which were subsequently seized as evidence.

The fresh recovery constitutes a significant development in the case and points towards a larger unlawful arms possession network.

Further investigation is underway to uncover the source of the recovered weapons and ammunition and to identify any other persons involved. Baramulla police said that it remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding public safety and maintaining peace and reiterates its resolve to act firmly against all unlawful activities that threaten security and public order.
