Guwahati, June 30 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday paid rich tributes to Vir Chakra awardee Captain Jintu Gogoi on his martyrdom day, remembering the young Army officer’s supreme sacrifice during the Kargil War and describing his legacy as an enduring source of inspiration for generations.

In a message posted on social media, the Chief Minister said Captain Gogoi’s unwavering devotion to the nation symbolised the highest ideals of courage, patriotism and selfless service.

“Humble tributes to Shaheed Captain Jintu Gogoi (Vir Chakra) on his Martyrdom Day. His unwavering devotion to Maa Bharti and his supreme sacrifice during the Kargil War embody the highest ideals of courage, duty and patriotism. His legacy will continue to inspire generations,” CM Sarma wrote.

Captain Jintu Gogoi, a native of Assam, laid down his life while leading his troops during the 1999 Kargil conflict against Pakistani intruders in Jammu and Kashmir.

For displaying exceptional bravery in the face of enemy fire, he was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra, one of India’s highest wartime gallantry awards.

His sacrifice has been remembered across Assam every year through commemorative programmes organised by the state government, the armed forces, educational institutions and veterans’ organisations.

Several schools and public institutions in the state have also been named after the decorated Army officer in recognition of his contribution to the nation.

The Kargil War, fought between May and July 1999, witnessed numerous acts of extraordinary courage by Indian soldiers who recaptured strategic mountain peaks occupied by Pakistani forces along the Line of Control.

Captain Gogoi remains one of Assam’s most celebrated military heroes and continues to inspire young people to serve the nation with dedication and courage.

The Chief Minister’s tribute came as people across the state remembered the brave officer’s sacrifice and reaffirmed their respect for the armed forces who continue to safeguard the country’s sovereignty.
