Guwahati, March 31 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Tuesday, launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing the party of indulging in “cheap and unacceptable politics” over popular Assamese singer late Zubeen Garg.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an election campaign, Chief Minister Sarma questioned the Congress’ intent, asking why its leaders visit “Zubeen Kshetra” with cameras.

“Zubeen Garg had clearly said he does not want to do politics. Yet Congress has dragged his name into its manifesto. This is an unpardonable mistake,” he said.

The Chief Minister also took a swipe at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, alleging that he even mispronounced the singer’s name as “Zubeen Marg”, which Chief Minister Sarma termed as disrespectful.

He also asserted that the people of Assam would “teach a lesson” to the Congress for politicising the cultural icon.

Chief Minister Sarma claimed that a decision related to Zubeen Garg could emerge within a month, though he did not elaborate.

He also said that if re-elected in Assam, the current Bharatiya Janata Party government would act against what he described as “inclusive mind politics”.

Referring to visits by political leaders, Chief Minister Sarma asked that why those going to Zubeen Kshetra do not also visit the memorial of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika, questioning their selective approach.

Zubeen Kshetra is a memorial site dedicated to the late Zubeen Garg, located at the place where his last rites were performed.

The site has emerged as an emotional landmark for fans and admirers, symbolising the singer’s cultural impact and deep connection with the people of Assam.

Over time, it has become a place where supporters gather to pay tribute and celebrate his legacy.

Chief Minister Sarma added that he would visit the site only after taking oath again as the Assam Chief Minister, reiterating that he would not spare anyone attempting to politicise Zubeen Garg’s name.

The iconic Assamese musician Zubeen Garg died during a sea outing in Singapore on September 19 last year.
