Guwahati, May 1 (IANS) A seven-month pregnant woman was allegedly killed by her husband in Assam’s Cachar district, triggering outrage among residents, police officials said on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Rabiya Begum. The incident took place in the Madhurbond area under the Cachar district, where she was allegedly assaulted by her husband, identified as Biru Miya.

Police said the accused has been arrested following a complaint lodged by the victim’s family members, and a detailed investigation has been initiated into the matter.

According to the family, Rabiya Begum had been married to the accused for about 6 years, and the couple had two children, aged 5 and 3.

Her relatives alleged that she had been facing repeated physical and mental abuse since her marriage.

They further claimed that the situation worsened after the accused allegedly became involved in an extramarital relationship and later married another woman. Since then, he would frequently assault Rabiya and subject her to severe cruelty, family members alleged.

Relatives also claimed that on several occasions, he poured hot food on her during violent altercations.

On the day of the incident, the accused allegedly contacted the victim’s family and informed them that her condition had become critical. Her father was asked to come immediately.

When the family reached the hospital where she had been taken, they reportedly noticed multiple injury marks on her body. They also alleged that there were visible signs suggesting strangulation.

Some neighbours told the family that the woman had been kicked in the abdomen, despite being seven months pregnant, shortly before she collapsed.

Following the complaint, police registered a case and detained the accused. He was later formally arrested.

The shocking incident has sparked anger in the locality, with residents demanding strict punishment for the accused and justice for the victim.

Police officials said statements of family members and neighbours are being recorded, while post-mortem findings are expected to help ascertain the exact cause of death. Further investigation into the case is underway.
