Assam litchi reaches Dubai market, opening new export avenues for farmers

Guwahati, June 9 (IANS) Assam’s famed Tezpur litchi, celebrated for its distinctive sweetness, aroma and juicy pulp, has taken a significant step towards global recognition with its first export consignment being shipped to Dubai, marking a major boost for fruit growers in the northeastern state, officials said on Tuesday.

Cultivated primarily in the Tezpur region of Sonitpur district, Tezpur litchi has long enjoyed a strong reputation in domestic markets.

The fruit received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2014, acknowledging its unique characteristics linked to the agro-climatic conditions of the region.

The GI recognition has helped strengthen the product’s identity and improve its marketability.

Litchi cultivation plays an important role in the local economy of several parts of Assam, particularly in and around Tezpur.

Thousands of farmers depend on the seasonal fruit crop for their livelihoods. Known for its bright red appearance, high pulp content and rich flavour, Tezpur litchi is widely regarded as one of the finest litchi varieties produced in India.

Agriculture and horticulture experts believe that access to international markets can significantly enhance returns for growers by expanding demand beyond traditional domestic buyers.

Export opportunities are also expected to encourage better post-harvest management, packaging and quality standards, helping farmers secure higher incomes.

The export of Tezpur litchi is being facilitated with the support of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), which has been working to promote agricultural exports from the Northeast and connect local producers with overseas markets.

A senior official on Tuesday said the development aligns with broader efforts to increase the global visibility of agricultural products from the region and integrate farmers into international value chains.

The Northeast’s diverse horticultural produce has increasingly attracted attention due to its quality and unique geographical characteristics.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal welcomed the development earlier on Monday, highlighting the significance of the export shipment.

In a post on X, Goyal said, “Assam’s renowned GI-tagged Tezpur litchi is now spreading its sweetness in foreign markets.

With the support of APEDA, the first export shipment of Tezpur litchi has departed for Dubai.”

He added that the initiative would help provide global recognition to the region’s litchi, ensure better prices for farmers and create fresh opportunities for agricultural products from Northeast India in international markets.
