Assam moving from ‘Tea to Tech’, says Himanta Sarma as govt pushes balanced growth

Guwahati, July 8 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday asserted that the state is witnessing a broad-based and balanced growth trajectory, saying the government is simultaneously promoting traditional sectors such as tea alongside emerging industries, technology and tourism to create employment opportunities and reduce outward migration.

In a post on social media platform X, CM Sarma said Assam’s development model is focused on ensuring that every sector receives equal attention so that economic growth reaches the grassroots.

“Assam’s growth trajectory is broad based and balanced. From tea to technology to tourism, we are advancing every sector with equal focus to drive grassroots transformation and create opportunities for our people,” the Chief Minister wrote while sharing a campaign graphic carrying the slogan ‘Tea to Tech’.

The visual message highlighted the government’s vision of building “a new Assam where nobody has to leave their motherland in search of opportunities”, underlining the state’s emphasis on employment generation and industrial expansion.

The statement comes as the BJP-led government has been aggressively pitching Assam as an emerging investment destination through a series of industrial and infrastructure initiatives.

Over the past few years, the state has focused on attracting investments in electronics, semiconductors, renewable energy, food processing, logistics and information technology, while continuing to strengthen its globally renowned tea industry.

The government has also been promoting tourism by developing religious, eco and heritage destinations, alongside improving connectivity through new highways, bridges, airports and railway projects.

CM Sarma has repeatedly maintained that Assam is undergoing a structural economic transformation driven by policy reforms, improved ease of doing business and investment-friendly measures.

The state government has said these initiatives are aimed at generating large-scale employment, boosting entrepreneurship and ensuring that young people can build careers within Assam instead of migrating to other parts of the country.

The Chief Minister has frequently used the phrase “Tea to Tech” to symbolise Assam’s transition from an economy largely dependent on agriculture and plantations to one increasingly powered by technology, manufacturing, innovation and modern services.
