Guwahati, May 22 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the state is steadily moving towards becoming a power surplus state with major investments being made to strengthen energy infrastructure and ensure reliable electricity supply.

In a post on X, CM Sarma highlighted that Assam has set an energy infrastructure target of Rs 14,202 crore by 2035 and is currently implementing four major projects worth Rs 6,235 crore across the state.

“Assam is steadily moving towards becoming a power surplus state. With a ₹14,202 cr energy vision and ₹6,235 cr worth of projects already underway, we are strengthening our power infrastructure to support growth and ensure reliable supply for our people,” the Chief Minister wrote.

According to officials, the state government has been focusing on expanding generation capacity, improving transmission networks and modernising distribution systems to meet the growing demand for electricity in both urban and rural areas.

The government has also been laying emphasis on renewable energy initiatives, including solar power projects, as part of its long-term energy security and sustainability roadmap.

Hydropower and thermal power projects are also being upgraded to improve efficiency and boost overall supply capacity.

Officials said Assam’s energy vision aims to support industrial growth, infrastructure expansion and improved quality of life by ensuring uninterrupted power supply across the state.

The push towards becoming a power surplus state is also expected to strengthen Assam’s position as an investment destination in the Northeast. The state has witnessed a steady rise in electricity demand in recent years due to rapid urbanisation, expansion of industries and increasing household electrification.

The government has been implementing multiple projects to upgrade substations, transmission corridors and rural electrification infrastructure.

The Chief Minister has repeatedly stressed the importance of strengthening the power sector to support Assam’s broader economic growth plans and future industrial expansion.

Officials added that several energy projects are presently in different stages of implementation and are expected to significantly enhance the state’s electricity generation and transmission capabilities over the coming years.
