Guwahati, June 24 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday highlighted the state government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and medical education, asserting that the transformation underway is aimed at improving access to quality healthcare and creating a healthier future for the people of the state.

In a social media post, CM Sarma said Assam’s healthcare transformation is not merely about constructing hospitals but about changing lives through better healthcare access, modern medical education and the creation of a skilled healthcare workforce.

The Chief Minister stated that the state is witnessing an unprecedented expansion of medical infrastructure, with several medical colleges and hospitals being developed across different districts.

According to information shared by him, 11 new medical college campuses are currently under construction at an estimated investment of Rs 8,233 crore. Of these, five campuses are expected to be ready by 2026, while six hospitals linked to the new institutions have already crossed 80 per cent completion. Work on another five hospitals is progressing simultaneously, with four additional projects in the pipeline.

CM Sarma noted that the government’s objective is to ensure that every district in Assam benefits from improved healthcare facilities and medical education opportunities.

He said the expansion would help bridge regional disparities in healthcare access and strengthen the state’s capacity to meet future health challenges.

The Chief Minister also emphasised that the ongoing initiatives would contribute to producing a new generation of doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals, thereby reducing dependence on other states for specialised medical services and education.

Over the past few years, Assam has emerged as one of the fastest-growing states in terms of medical education infrastructure. The state government has launched an ambitious programme to establish medical colleges in nearly every district, significantly increasing the number of MBBS seats and healthcare institutions.

The expansion complements major healthcare facilities such as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Guwahati and several government medical colleges that have strengthened tertiary healthcare services in the state.

The government maintains that these investments will play a crucial role in ensuring affordable, accessible and quality healthcare for people across Assam while supporting long-term socio-economic development.
