India and Tasmania have discussed avenues for expanding bilateral engagement and developing new areas of cooperation during the first visit to the island state by India’s High Commissioner to Australia, Nagesh Singh.
Singh, accompanied by his wife, Pragya Singh, attended a luncheon hosted in their honour by India’s Honorary Consul in Tasmania, Dr Navpreet Kaur. Consul General of India in Melbourne, Anish Rajan, was also present.
According to the High Commission of India in Canberra, the gathering brought together representatives from the Tasmanian Government, Parliament, defence, local government and key industry sectors to discuss common priorities and opportunities for closer engagement.
Among the distinguished guests were Craig Farrell MLC, President of the Tasmanian Legislative Council, and Madeleine Ogilvie MP, Member for Clark.
The discussions provided an opportunity to explore areas where India’s strengths and Tasmania’s capabilities could complement each other, while identifying prospects for mutually beneficial partnerships.
The interaction also underlined the importance of strengthening India’s engagement with individual Australian states and territories to broaden economic, institutional and people-to-people connections.
The visit marked an opportunity to build closer links between India and Tasmania as part of the wider Australia-India partnership.
