New Delhi, October 31(Australia India News Newsdesk)
Applicants seeking Australian visas in India may be required to submit fingerprints and facial photographs under new biometric requirements that came into effect on October 26, 2026.
The Australian Department of Home Affairs has introduced the requirements to strengthen identity verification, reduce identity fraud and improve the security of the country’s immigration and border management systems.
According to the department, applicants who need to provide biometric information will receive an email explaining the procedure. Depending on their eligibility, they will be required to attend an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC) or use the Australian Immi App.
The biometric process involves capturing a digital photograph of the applicant’s face and scanning all 10 fingerprints. The information is stored securely and may be compared with previously collected biometric records when applicants seek another visa or enter Australia.
The department may also share or verify biometric information with Australian and international agencies to establish an applicant’s identity, criminal history and immigration background. Access to the stored information is restricted to authorised departmental officers.
The new requirements apply only to visa applications lodged on or after October 26, 2026. Applications submitted before that date are not affected.
Applicants asked to attend an ABCC outside Australia must book an appointment in advance. VFS Global operates these centres on behalf of the Australian Government in several countries and charges a separate service fee for biometric collection.
Applicants must carry a valid passport or other approved travel document to their appointments. Those applying within Australia will receive an official letter or invitation specifying the appointment arrangements.
The department has also outlined special arrangements for applicants with temporary injuries affecting their face or fingerprints. Where necessary, applicants can request additional time or make arrangements for private biometric collection and assistance.
Australia’s biometric collection process is governed by the Migration Act and the Privacy Act, which provide the legal framework for collecting, storing and using personal identifying information.
