Kolkata, June 23 (IANS) The West Bengal Police on Tuesday recovered 3 kg of gold jewellery valued at Rs 4 crore, from the residence of Nadia Zilla Parishad member Tina Bhowmik Saha in Nadia district, who is said to be close aide of influential Trinamool Congress leader Sabyasachi Dutta.

The police, acting on information shared from arrested ex-mayor of Bidhannagar searched the residence of Tina Bhowmik Saha last night. The Bidhannagar police confiscated everything and has started an investigation into the matter.

According to police, the gold was recovered following an overnight search at Nadia Zilla Parishad member Tina Bhowmik Saha at Tehatta.

Earlier this month, former mayor and Trinamool leader Sabyasachi Dutta was arrested by Bidhannagar South police over multiple charges including extortion and illegal assets. He was the candidate from Barasat in recently concluded Assembly polls but could not win the election.

The police, investigating the source of Sabyasachi’s illegal assets, came to know that he garnered gold, mainly by extortion and using black money.

The investigators came across receipts for buying that gold from his flat in Rajarhat and a bank locker. Huge amount of gold jewellery was also recovered.

Taking into account several pieces of information obtained from his interrogation, Bidhannagar police conducted a search in Tehatta, last night.

The investigators, took along Sabyasachi for overnight search operation. They went to the house of Nadia Zilla Parishad member and Trinamool leader Tina Bhowmik Saha, known to have close links with the former.

About 3 kg of gold jewellery was recovered from Tina’s house. The market value of the seized gold is estimated at more than Rs 4.39 crores.

According to police, investigators are questioning Tina Bhowmik Saha on how she came to be in possession of huge amount of gold jewellery. The police however did not reveal further information regarding the investigation into the matter.
