Kolkata, June 19 (IANS) Ten more persons have been arrested in connection with an incident in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district where a group of Trinamool Congress supporters, led by Regina Bibi, wife of arrested party leader Jahangir Khan, allegedly tried to storm the Falta Police Station on June 16 in an attempt to free him from police custody.

With the latest arrests, the total number of people held in the case has increased to 25, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari told mediapersons on Friday afternoon.

He said he had directed the administration to identify the properties of those involved in the attack, confiscate them, auction them and recover the cost of the damage caused to public property.

“Cases in connection with the Falta incident have been registered against the attackers under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including provisions related to anti-state activities. We will not only ensure exemplary punishment for the attackers, but compensation for the damage will also be recovered by confiscating their properties,” CM Adhikari said while confirming that a total of 25 people have been arrested so far in connection with the Falta attack.

“Of those arrested, 12 are currently in police custody, while the remaining 13 are in judicial custody. The accused will be identified and punished after screening videos available on social media,” Adhikari added.

Speaking on the occasion, he also said that he had directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police to take over the investigation into the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker Prashanta Dey at Bagnan in Howrah district, allegedly by Trinamool Congress activists on Wednesday night.

“At the same time, compensation of Rs 9 lakh will be provided to the family members of the deceased. Of the total amount, Rs 4 lakh will be provided from the state exchequer, while the remaining Rs 5 lakh will be disbursed from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund,” Adhikari said.
