Bengal: Trinamool’s state vice president Jay Prakash Majumdar arrested

Kolkata, June 3 (IANS) The police on Wednesday arrested Trinamool Congress’ state vice-president in West Bengal, Jay Prakash Majumdar, on charges of illegally occupying a rented accommodation at Salt Lake on the northern outskirts of Kolkata.

The landlady of the accommodation where Majumdar used to stay with his wife had recently filed a complaint at the Bidhannagar (North) Police Station) on this count. In the complaint, the house-owner also alleged that Majumdar used to abuse her and threaten her about his political influence whenever she asked for the rent.

Majumdar, along with his wife, started residing at that rented accommodation at a nominal rent in 2014. But, as per the complaint of the landlady, he even stopped paying that nominal rent after some time.

So, as per the complaint, whenever she used to ask Majumdar to either pay the rent or vacate the rented accommodation, the latter used to threaten her with dire consequences. The accommodation was originally owned by the husband of that landlady, and after his death, she became its owner.

On Wednesday, tension broke out between Majumdar and the landlady over locking one portion of the accommodation. This time, the other residents in the area reacted, and they started protesting.

As Majumdar tried to escape in his vehicle, the protesting neighbours snatched the keys of the vehicle. Understanding that the public pulse was totally against him, Majumdar assured them of vacating the house at the earliest.

But the local people did not stop protesting. Soon, the local Bidhannagar (North) Police Station was informed. The cops came and arrested Majumdar.

Majumdar had a diverse political career. Originally associated with Congress, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and also became the party’s state vice-president in West Bengal. However, after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the BJP suspended him for anti-party activities.

He then promptly joined Trinamool Congress and was also given the post of the state vice-president in the previous ruling party in West Bengal.
