Kolkata, May 27 (IANS) Renowned Bengali film director Anik Dutta passed away on Wednesday at a private hospital in Kolkata while undergoing treatment there after falling from the terrace of his former wife’s residence in Hindustan Park.

The news of his death has been confirmed by the CPI-M leadership as well as hospital and police sources.

The sudden and tragic demise of the 66-year-old renowned director has cast a shadow of grief over the cultural circles, including Bengali Film Industry.

According to police sources, Anik Dutta was seriously injured after suddenly falling from the terrace of his former wife’s house. He was rescued in a critical condition and taken to the private hospital in Dhakuria, where the doctors declared him dead.

However, there is already confusion about whether it was just an accident or there was some other reason behind it.

The police are investigating why and for what reason Anik Dutta suddenly went to the roof on Wednesday afternoon.

The officers of Gariahat police station and detectives from the Homicide branch of Kolkata Police have started investigating the incident.

The police have already surrounded the place where Anik Dutta fell at the multi-storey building.

In addition to examining the CCTV footage of the multi-storey building, all aspects are being investigated to find out how he fell from the roof or if there is any other reason behind it.

Anik Dutta is the grandson of Narendra Chandra Dutta, the founder of United Bank of India.

He made his directorial debut in 2012 with the film ‘Bhooter Bhabishyat’ which shot him to stardom. The movie was both a critical and commercial success.

He is also known for directing films like ‘Aschorjo Prodip’ (2013), ‘Meghnadbad Rahasya’ (2017), ‘Borunbabur Bondhu’ (2020) and ‘Aparajito’ (2022). His last directorial venture was ‘Joto Kando Kolkatatei’ (2025), which featured actors Abir Chatterjee, Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed and Dulal Lahiri in key roles.

An outspoken and left-leaning filmmaker, Dutta was known for his opposition to former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

In 2019, his film ‘Bhobishyoter Bhoot’ was prevented from being screened in theatres due to the movie’s political tone.

An ardent admirer of Oscar-winning filmmaker Satyajit Ray, Dutta’s films carried the stamp of Ray’s style of filmmaking.
