Bihar: Gaya Central Jail official suspended for violating prison rules, collusion with inmates

Patna, June 26 (IANS) In a significant administrative action, the Bihar Home Department has suspended the Deputy Superintendent of Gaya Central Jail over allegations of negligence, violation of prison rules, and alleged collusion with inmates.

According to official orders issued by the Home Department’s Prison Division, Sudarshan Prasad Singh has been placed under suspension pending a departmental inquiry.

The suspension order cites several serious allegations against the jail official, including failure to register an FIR after the recovery of cannabis inside the jail, allowing meetings between inmates and outsiders without proper authorisation, violating jail security protocols, misbehavior with prison staff and alleged assault and mistreatment of inmates.

During the suspension period, Sudarshan Prasad Singh’s headquarters have been designated as Khudiram Bose Central Jail in Muzaffarpur.

The case originated from an incident on June 16, when jail authorities conducted a search operation inside one of the prison wards.

During the search, cannabis was allegedly recovered from an inmate identified as Ramesh Yadav, also known as Suman Yadav.

According to departmental reports, the Jail Superintendent directed the Deputy Superintendent to lodge an FIR against the inmate.

However, it is alleged that Sudarshan Prasad Singh failed to comply with the instruction and did not register the case. Officials treated this alleged refusal as a serious lapse in duty.

The Home Department’s report further said that the officer permitted relatives and outsiders to meet prisoners inside his office without following established prison procedures.

According to the allegations, several visitors were allowed entry without mandatory security checks, and their details were allegedly not recorded in the jail’s visitor register.

The report stated that senior officials had verbally cautioned him on multiple occasions, but the alleged practices continued.

The departmental findings also mention complaints from jail personnel.

Staff members reportedly alleged that the officer used abusive language and became aggressive when prison guards attempted to enforce security rules.

Additionally, allegations have been made that he physically assaulted inmates without justification.

These accusations will now be examined during the departmental inquiry.

The Home Department has initiated a detailed departmental investigation into all the allegations.

If the charges are substantiated during the inquiry, the officer could face further disciplinary action, including dismissal from service.
