‘BJP goons do not want anyone to visit Mamata Banerjee’s residence’: Trinamool MP on Kunal Ghosh egg attack

New Delhi, June 16 (IANS) Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy on Tuesday strongly condemned the egg attack on party MLA Kunal Ghosh outside former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence in Kolkata, alleging BJP’s involvement and raising questions over the security arrangements in the area.

Reacting to the incident, Roy said, “There are no words to condemn this incident. I already filed a complaint about it yesterday with the DC South and DG Security of Kalighat. If such an incident can happen even when Former CM Mamata Banerjee is under Z-Plus security, it is very unfortunate. What is the law if people can stand outside and throw eggs? This shows that BJP goons do not want anyone to visit Mamata Banerjee’s residence.”

The incident took place around 6.30 p.m. on Monday when Trinamool MLA Kunal Ghosh was speaking to reporters outside Banerjee’s residence in the Kalighat area of south Kolkata. Ghosh, who represents the Beliaghata Assembly constituency, had just come out of the residence when a man allegedly hurled an egg at him from close range.

According to eyewitnesses, Ghosh attempted to duck, but the egg struck his head and broke on impact. The accused was later identified as Chandan.

Condemning the attack, Ghosh described it as a “planned act of hooliganism” and questioned the role of security personnel present at the scene.

“I was standing there speaking to the media after coming out of Mamata-di’s house. Two boys were within arm’s reach. I was unarmed. One of them threw an egg and ran away. Nobody protested, nobody stopped them, and nobody tried to catch them,” Ghosh said.

The incident has triggered a political controversy in West Bengal, with Trinamool leaders alleging a deliberate attempt to intimidate party members. The attack has also sparked concerns over security outside the residence of the former Chief Minister, who is protected under the Z-Plus security category.

Police are investigating the incident, while Trinamool leaders have demanded strict action against those responsible.
