YESTERDAY’S horror smash in Minyama could have been a lot worse if it weren’t for the actions of a handful of quick-thinking people.
Paramedics were called to the intersection of Nicklin Way and Kensington Dr, Minyama, about 5.25am after a single vehicle crashed into a pole.
Buddina man Steele Hatchman was dropping his girlfriend home before work when he lost control of his Holden Commodore near Jessica Park.
“Tyres just slipped out as the lights went green,” he said.
“The car was spinning around, but kind of in slow-motion.
“I just tucked my legs up, put them towards the centre console, and wrapped my arms around my missus to make sure she was ok.”
Fire crews had to cut Steele out of the car, with his girlfriend Lulu Carrette, 24, walking away with only a few bruises.
The couple are both in Nambour Hospital in a stable condition.
Steele managed to avoid a broken leg; suffering some ligament damage, extensive abrasions, and a bump on the head.
Even though his uninsured car had only been his for three days, the 25-year-old is counting is blessings that yesterday’s crash wasn’t more serious.
“Its just a car – walking away with your life is more important.”
Now, he wants to share a frothie or two with the two good samaritans that stopped to help after the crash.
“Two people came, one was a female – an older nurse – and one was a younger guy,” Steele said.
“I’m not sure if he was a nurse as well, but he ripped the door open and steering wheel out of the way.
“If I can find them I’d like to buy them a beer and say thank you.”
